Prominent Nazi leaders were prosecuted in military tribunals, marking a turning point between classical and contemporary international law. These trials served three important purposes: first, they thoroughly documented Nazi atrocities; second, the trials exposed many of the defendants for the war criminals they were and denied the Nazi leaders any possibility of martyrdom; and finally, the trials are of ground-breaking legal significance. Also, of note, the first Nuremberg trial features perhaps the worst cross-examination ever conducted in history, undertaken by the United States prosecutor – a cross-examination so bad that law schools now teach it as a lesson on how not to cross-examine a witness.
