VIRTUAL: Ditch the Fall Clean-Up with Claudia Thompson
Tuesday, October 17:00—8:15 PMZoom
**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.**
The traditional fall garden “clean-up” is destructive to our ecosystem, harming life for birds, butterflies, pollinators, insects, and other valuable fauna that bring joy to our gardens. So, leave those leaves! Stop cutting down all those perennial beds! Come learn about a new approach to gardening that embraces the seasonal cycles of growth and decay and harnesses ecological systems for the good. By doing so, we create healthier soil and nurture biodiversity. It also allows us to create more beautiful gardens, growing many wildflowers and plants that will not survive conventional landscaping practices. In addition to being ecologically smart, lightening up on fall clean-up “chores” will save you money and time, and promote your own health. Join us to dissect this issue in detail— what practices should we keep, and which do we jettison for a better world?
About Claudia Thompson: Ms. Thompson founded Grow Native Massachusetts in 2010 and served as the organization’s President and Executive Director through its first decade, simultaneously becoming recognized nationally as a leader in the native plant movement. Her work as a landscape ecologist is also deeply informed by her personal experience over three decades, transforming her relatively small urban garden into rich habitat where she documented more than 80 species of birds.
Her lifelong career in the environmental sector has included other notable roles, serving as Director of Education for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Director of Drumlin Farm for Mass Audubon, and on the board of the New England Wild Flower Society. She is a strong advocate for the importance of land stewardship on all lands— by all people— and believes that conservation begins at home.
