Lego SPIKE Essentials STEM Classes for Grades 3-6

This STEM course taught by robotics engineer and Groton resident Divya Gangaiah introduces young students to the fascinating world of transportation. By focusing on various modes of transportation, you’re not only teaching them about different vehicles and systems but also fostering a deeper understanding of how these systems work and their impact on our daily lives. Using LEGO as the primary tool makes this learning process engaging and hands-on, allowing students to actively participate in building and experimenting with their creations. This approach transforms abstract concepts into tangible experiences, making complex ideas more accessible and enjoyable for younger learners. The course encourages creativity and problem-solving by challenging students to design, build, and test different transportation models, such as buses, cable cars, and ferries. As they work on these projects, they also learn essential STEM skills, including basic engineering principles, programming, and the importance of collaboration.

By integrating play and learning, you’re helping students develop a love for science and engineering early on. This fun, interactive approach not only keeps them engaged but also lays a strong foundation for their future education in STEM fields.

Classes in order:

Jan. 4 Building a bus and simulating bus stops

Jan. 11 Creating and testing a cable car program using LEGO

Jan. 25 Creating a helicopter using LEGO

Feb. 1 Creating a river ferry to transport people
