Donna Nowak has been volunteering inside MCI Shirley for 13 years with the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP). In group settings, the incarcerated build a sense of community by practicing the components of nonviolent behavior that lead to cooperation, self-esteem and an understanding of the struggle.
